Re: 97 F250 spark plug issue... RESOLVED!!!

i was a ford tech working at the dealership and we saw this happen sometimes. its not as common as some folks say but it happens. if anyone has it happen they should know that the dealership in your area can repair it without removing the head or using a helicoil. the process is to tap the head for a larger sparkplug with a different thread pitch to avoid the fusing issue. we use a special tap and there is an alternate sparkplug that works in the new threads. also if anyone has low mileage vehicles it is a great idea to replace the sparkplugs or at least remove them and apply antiseize every 30000 miles. i know its more often than the service interval due to the platinum plugs that are used but it can be real cheap insurance.

    thank god for blownoutsparkplug.com!!!

guy drove up the day after thanksgiving and met me at my truck. I ran a bit late, and they had already replaced the blown out plug and put their parts on the other 7 plugs!!! its guaranteed and they haven't had one fail yet!! I went and had them put their parts in my gas P71 as well so it's plugs won't blow-- problem is with all fords.. total cost: $1500 both vehicles run noticeably smoother now

could have been cheaper too if i was willing to wait for another job to come along in the area, but the truck needed to be moved.

so, yeah, if you own a ford i'd get on the wait list and have them put their parts in BEFORE you blow a plug.

    Dear Broken,

I believe Ford was aware of this problem. Does anyone know if there's a recall? I'd check the TSB's before I'd shell out that kinda' money.

Good luck and keep us posted.

    B/r,

I hear this happens often and I have been told that it can typically be repaired with a helicoil. Call around and see if you can find a mechanic who has made this repair before. You could always just pull the head off yourself and bring it to a machine shop for repair. $2500 sounds steep. Good luck.
