what is the gas mileage of a 1996 crown vic CNG car?

Hey I just bought my crown vic last month and have not driven it enough to find out the fuel mileage could someone fill me in to what type of mpg I can expect with this large car? it is a dedicated CNG car with a 36 gal capacity, and has a total of 6 tanks 2 under the car where the gasoline tank would be, and 2 in the trunk just above the 2 down below, and 2 more in the spare tire area in the bottom of the tank.. I have heard 22 mpg on freeway does this sound at all realistic?

That sounds a little high but possible on the highway. You're lucky you have those extra two tanks. They really help the range.

with 6 tanks any idea the range? Im guessing if 18 miles per gallon at 36 gallons it would be 650 miles of range????? seems a bit high, is this right?

I find it really hard to believe you have 36 gge worth of storage in there. I've got a 97 Crown Vic with extended tanks, and they bring be up to about 14-15 gge.

As for mileage, I get 15-17 around town, and 22-24 highway. Accelleration really hurts on these big heavy cars with their relatively underpowered V-8's.

I don't where you got the 36 gge from, but it's probably more like 12-14. I've gotten 300 miles out of an extended range Crown Vic.

I have driven my 1997 Crown Vic 2313.2 miles using 98.138 GGE for a MPGGE of 23.5 I have the extended range tank option, and get about 280 miles per fill. Did you get your system checked for leaks yet?

I walked over all the NG lines to the intake- with a CGI combustionable gas indicator tool from my company no leaks found, and YES the the sticker on the front radiator shroud says 36 us water gallons max capacity at 3000 psig

what is the common areas for leaks by the way?

the tanks- 2 long skinny tanks under the car where the gasoline tank would be.. and the 2 green medium sized tanks in the trunck between wheel wells and then 2 larger tanks in the lower part of the trunk and they fit that area pretty well. I will take a photo of that sticker and post.

The water gallon capacity is very different from the CNG gge capacity. At 3000 psi I believe 1 gge of CNG is about 3.5 gallons of water capacity.

OK I talked to my friend today. He said with the stock tank set up he had a usable range of 110 miles. I added a 5 gge tank but I didn't ask the range now. Something to keep in mind these vehicles were built for municipal fleet use with onsite filling. Range was not an issue.

My '97 Crown Vic is doing a bit worse than your in town figures but that's with the wife running the A/C full blast.

Your profile indicates that you're in AZ . . . you're probably experiencing the one set of conditions where I realized the worst possible fuel economy in my '97 CrownVic: Around town driving in very high temperatures.

You may also want to check/change your air filter . . . for some reason clean air filters have a more profound impact on my CNG fuel economy than I experienced with gasoline powered cars. Desert driving can quickly clog air filters.
