  • [Merged] ZAP Jonway Hybrid CNG SUV Targets Alt-Fuels Market

A bifuel clone of a Toyota Rav-4 is coming to their dealers in the USA and worldwide. I don't think they will sell many here but I remember when the Japanese started selling cars here. They looked a lot more dorky, were smaller, but sold. That was only about twenty years after WWII. It did not take long for Japan to gain a major share of our market, and eventually they were known to be of high quality.

My hope is that this will be a wake up call to all auto companies that they need to start offering CNG/gasoline bifuels. If you watch the videos you will see that this comes from a large factory.

Zap is known for a wide array of electric vehicles, they have been selling here for several years. I think they are all made in China, and are popular in Asia.

Re: The First Factory Built Bifuel Auto is from China. From Zap-Jonway.

That's encouraging but I'm not going to hold my breath for this one. Speaking from personal experience, Zap has had a very poor track record when it comes to reliability and build quality.

I'm hoping they can turn it around and produce a nice little bi-fuel.

I am encouraged by the fact that it is sold as a taxi in Asia. Are you referring to its electric vehicles? They have survived, and thrived so they must be acceptable on some level. I have no personal knowledge though. They will have to offer service. I did notice that they only have a one year warranty.

Zap is a bunch of con artists and purveyors of Chinese built crap. This looks to be a RAV4 clone glider powered by hopes, dreams, and buzzwords.

This comes out of a very large factory in China. They are capable of producing decent automobiles or wouldn't be able to sell them as taxis. I hope you are able to get one for your alternate fuel vehicle show coming up.

What I don't understand is why media usually quote bi-fuel gasoline/CNG vehicles as "hybrids"...

They just don't know the nomenclature. It is getting complicated. Lets see what we have: electric, hybrid, E-85 , diesel, bi-fuel, dual-fuel LNG/diesel. Then we will eventually run CNG hybrids with electric batteries. Fuel Cell maybe. I am sure I forgot some. I don't see any end to this proliferation because there are so many different types of needs, uses, and preferences. Oh I forgot, propane autogas, South American alcohol/CNG/gasoline trifuel and?

I was in Los Gatos a few years back, and visited this trendy electric vehicle store right in the middle of town. They sold nothing but a bunch of ultra low quality garbage. That ZAP brand was their featured automobile.

OMG. What a nightmare. This would make a good comedy movie. Thanks. It will be interesting to watch what happens with the CNG bifuel though. I can't believe they aren't all in jail!

The Zap legend continues. May bring back the Aptera: http://green.autoblog.com/2012/04/30...onway-product/
                        Like a recurring nightmare.

Just to help add to the confusion. One of the Tulsa dealers is putting a small conforming CNG tank where the batteries would normally go on their Chevy SUV and calling it an "Oklahoma Hybrid". 100 mile range on CNG, normal range on gasoline. Still way better than a plug in.

"Oklahoma Hybrid", just like Frybrid with its veg-oil conversion kits for Diesels.
