  • AFDC Database of CNG stations for Garmin (19 Dec 2010)

This zipped file in the entire AFDC database of CNG stations in gpx format suitable for downloading into a Garmin Nuvi GPS as a POI file. Public, private and planned stations are included. I included private stations because in emergencies you may (or may not) refuel by asking.

It is Garmin format, not PC format. You need this software on your PC so as to connect to the Garmin and load jenki_putnik's POI file.

Thanks so much for this; I just downloaded it. Perhaps a dumb question -- say I'm not near home and low on gas, how do I figure out on my Garmin which stations are CNG stations now that I've downloaded this?

Has anyone seen the CNG POI for a TOMTOM? Got a new TomTom as a gift. I have been using a Garmin Nuvi with the CNG station POI. I want to install the same CNG POI on the new GPS

There is a free program 'gpsbabel' that will do the conversions needed. Google itl

Thank you for posting this file.
Considerig that this list is now 2+ years old,
do you have an updated version available?

Try the link for "Data Download" here:
                http://www.afdc.energy.gov/locator/stations/

The file will have to be manipulated using a program such as mentioned above.

Steps for downloading AFDC station data as Garmin Nuvi
                  points of interest

Downloat the afdc database in CSV format. select CNG
and all stations. Many times Private station operators will
let you refuel in emergincies but this is not assured..

edit the first line to read so that:

                  Station name = name
                  street addess = address
                  zip = post
                  station phone = phone
Groups with access code = desc
                  Access days time = comment

Download and install gpsbabel. There is a version that you can use on the web at gpsvisualizer.com.

The input file type is Universal csv with field structure
output file type is Garmin point of interest (.gpi)

make sure uou fill out the default option category of output sto something like "CNG (Jan 17 2012)" this is what the Nuvi will actually name the data.

Once you have a .gpi file, plug in the Nuvi to your computer and copy the .gpi file to the Garmin/poi/ directory

Search National Renewable Energy Laboratory in the iPhone app store for the free ALT FUEL tool which uses the same database. Corrections/updates can be submitted from a desktop/laptop to afdc.energy.gov and updates are done as soon as they are confirmed by a person contracted to keep the list current by Clean Cities Coalition.
