Hey gang, CNGchat needs your help!

For over a decade we have enjoyed providing this little corner of the Internet for folks to discuss all things natural gas vehicles. It is the largest forum of its kind: with some 70,000 posts on over 11,000 topics. But with continued low gasoline & diesel prices and strong automaker support for electric vehicles, consumer interest in CNG has dropped considerably, and with it has visitor traffic here. As a result, Google ad revenues no longer cover hosting fees.

If you find CNGchat to be a useful resource then please consider making a modest donation to support keeping this remarkable pool of knowledge available to the alternative fuels community. Thanks!

A couple of photos in MORE MEDIA for this tow truck auction on GovDeals show the CNG tank used for rescue fueling by State of Oregon Motorpool. It may not have been used much, if at all, since no one familiar with the 100 or so CNG Civic fleet in the Motorpool had ever mentioned being refueled over the road by a tow truck. Auction ends May 2 3:20 PM PDT.

Auction on white 2004 Civic GX 1HGEN26534L000070 ends 28 Dec 2018 6:30AM ET (price near $700, 10hrs from auction end).
This vehicle is the second to last that will be auctioned of the 100+ 2001-2005 CNG Civics in the motorpool - the Civics are being sold off, at this point, solely due to expired tanks and were likely the ones with the fewest problems of any in the fleet.

This car, in particular, had an instrument cluster replaced. Other than oil changes, the maintenance records show the recalculated odometer reading suggesting the car was only driven 48938 miles in 14 years (3500mi/yr).

                      25036 transmission overhaul - recall $0
28034 replace battery | tank inspection
30341 16230-pms low pressure fuel filter replaced
                      30341 30K service
                      15061035901 replace fuel receptacle o-ring
140326 30341 16230-pms low pressure fuel filter replaced
                      160629 40563 replace battery
161228 41462 replace instrument cluster ($605) - now set at zero miles
                      170405 42428 tank inspection
                      180417 46284 replace tires
                      181107 48931 replace battery

Total spent on car over its life by motorpool $1630 parts plus $3752 labor ($32/mo)

State of Oregon also has an auction on a white 2004 Chev Express 2500 cargo van 1GCGG25U441153742 126Kmi ending 28 Dec 2018 7:30PM ET (near $820, 22hrs from auction end). Van uses only CNG (not bi-fuel).

Like the Civic auction ending same day, it will need a replacement tank which can cost about $4000.

This Civic GX is the first State Motorpool CNG car to be auctioned in 2019. Auction on this white 2004 Civic GX with 91K miles 1HGEN26574L000069 ends 14 Jan 2019 6:30PM ET

Maintenance records show the 2004 was towed (when it only had 5K miles) after running out of fuel, got 2 new windshields, 2 batteries, tires (40K), instrument cluster (70K), 4 new plugs & coils (80K), and fuel filters replaced at:

                            16230-PMS-A03 B/Low 30K 40K 50K 60K 70K 80K 90K

Totals over life of the car were $3800 parts and $6600 labor.

The last Motorpool Civic auctioned in 2018 was driven to CA 18 hours ahead of snow falling on Siskiyou Summit. 60mph, 2500rpm on grades, tires inflated to 40psi - 54mpg over the 226mile 4300ft pass. Last fill in Medford Oregon was a PILOT LCNG station. And the first fillup in CA was a PG&E station in Chico (proprietary, but free, card required) where it took 4.2gge. Buyer lives in Irvine CA and needed a CNG car never registered in CA in order to acquire diamond (HOV) lane stickers under the new CA laws. Car ran flawlessly - like the others being auctioned now, these were kept in the fleet until the tanks expired because they still ran fine!

5 bidders with 24 hours left on the 2004 Civic GX 1HGEN26574L000069 with 91K miles. $610 presently and, although it runs fine, it will need an expired tank replaced (approx $4000.) anyone can send a private msg to me as I am nearby and can retrieve it from the auction agency and even drive it to CA as was done several weeks ago for another buyer.

OK, Californians - here is a GX never registered in your state and qualifies for a carpool lane sticker. City of Seattle put it to excellent use - a 2003 with 370,000 miles. Needs a replacement tank due to expiration date. And, the longest life of a CVT transmission that I have ever run across was 392,500 miles. This Auction ends Feb 7 at 5min to 8pm Pacific time:

Like the State of Oregon, these agencies had not bought CNG cars to replace those taken out of service. Seems they prefer gasoline or limiting trips to the range of a battery charge in the case of EVs. So, this link can be taken as a theme song for the Civic GX:
