  • 2001 GX White Oregon State Motorpool on Public Surplus posted today

1HGEN26401L000711 2001 GX White 104885 miles Cassette/radio. Tank may be good until 2016 but there was a 2001 GX with VIN . . .00058 that had a year 2000 tank meaning the $5000 tank replacement has to take place in 2015. Front Honda emblem missing. A buyer needs to register in advance with Public Surplus to bid. Even if car is inspected in person, the car is not allowed to be "moved." So, the condition of the CVT is unknown. Because car was kept in the fleet until it was about to need its tank replaced, it's likely the transmission was performing adequately.

State of Oregon is selling this one and another one after this auction ends Dec 26. The State Surplus sales has had both of these cars for over 6 months and waited until their tanks were nearly expired to auction them. The State office was told that the fuel station needed to drive a CNG car to CA now requires a tank inspection for card access when a current tank inspection was not required a month ago. At least there won't be snow at Siskiyou Summit next week if car is driven south. Frustrating.

Started the car at Surplus Sales today. Everything works - CVT showed no faults at all, power locks, windows, radio, lights. The State will be following this auction with a 2001 (Grn) and a 2002 (Wh) - usually one per week until they're gone. I also reached under the spare tire well and snapped a picture of the tank expiration date: May 2016

Oregon State Surplus already posted the Green 2001 GX before the white 2001 auction ended on Public Surplus. And didn't learn a thing - no tank expiration date AGAIN! (Note: the green GX is on GovDeals)

      http://www.govdeals.com/index.cfm?fa...36&acctid=5859

At least they reported, "engine misfires, transmission shudders."

It sat on their surplus car lot since last June while everything else under the sun was auctioned. All the time it's tank was closing in on its expiration date. Oregon is going to be paralyzed with freeze next week. The poor car has had every strike against it it's whole life - so sad.

Winning bid $4,600 + 10% for 2001 Civic GX 105,000 engine and CVT in good condition. Tank expires May 2016 (~ $5K to replace!). So, basically $10K for an early CNG Civic.

Oregon Surplus has now PUT THE THIRD CNG Civic up for auction - this one, like the first, on Public Surplus (second GX auction ends on GovDeals Dec 29.) It's a 2002 GX 86,000 miles "Intermittently runs rough and stalls." This is a result of in-house service or getting the work done at the Salem Honda dealer whose CNG mechanic quit. I picked up a 2006 GX with 75,000 miles that had been worked on by this dealership that had been towed, plugs replaced twice - after San Leandro Honda serviced it (a CA dealer), it never had any problems.

Anyway, once again the Oregon Surplus has not given the tank expiration date and waited 6 months in order to auction the car in the worst season for buyers to try to drive it home. All three GX's were auctioned over a holiday. May I also state that these cars have been woefully underutilized - 86,000 miles in 12 years?"

it is government what do you expect. it is way to cheap to drive cant get more money next year that way. drive a two ton dump truck to go pick up a dead dog off of the road than you have really wasted some money. waste a little here and a little there soon you have pissed billions away.guessing that the reason that it has only 86000 on it is that the people who drive government cars are lazy and dont want to fool with learning to fuel them and having to THINK about where the next fueling point is so as not to run out of fuel and they are not paying for the fuel so drive a suburban that gets 12 mpg. they have forgotten what public service means.

The 2002 white GX - other than dying when first started - is a clean car in great condition. No CVT judder. Only thing that doesn't work is the LR electric window (happens from time to time on my GX's too); the RF headlight cover is new (RF is yellowed). Fuel tank expires 01/2017. Still of the vintage having a cassette player.

Auction ends this hour on the green '01 (~$2200). I think for a car that's only running on 3 cylinders there may, in fact, not be any "judder" in the CVT. No floor mats, mold, moss - at least all the windows, lights work and it hasn't been in a collision. Tank expires 12/2015.

Oregon Surplus says 8 more Civics are being auctioned early next year. The State wants to get rid of the good running cars before the tanks expire. I'll have time to visit Salem as they are posted to give starting, running evaluations for out-of-state bidders here on cngchat. The '01 was just taken back to CA for the Gilroy - San Jose commute (diamond lane solo occupant access) by the mechanic who maintains the GreenTeam Trillium station in San Jose - which I just reviewed yesterday on cngchat. He's taking it to CA with the front wheels up on a U-Haul tow dolly behind his pickup. Probably cheaper than bus or air one-way travel to drive it back.

Interesting, but I'm not viewing these 2001, 2002 GX prices as especially below market, based on northern CA/Bay Area perspective...

Medford Honda and Salem Honda now at "auto row" expansive locations after leaving cramped downtown sites where the only parking was sometimes on side streets. Both are a part of the Lithia Auto Group and have CNG mechanics trained at the American Honda NW Regional Distribution Center state-of-the-art facility in Portland. A time-lapse video of the construction in Salem is intriguing to watch:

4095 Crater Lake Ave Medford OR; 1101 Van Ness Ave NE Salem OR; 16800 NE Sandy Blvd Portland OR

The State Surplus sales inspection yard to view the GX's being sold is a mere 4 blocks from the new Honda dealership. The auctions have been getting historically HIGH prices compared to other '01-'02 Civics found on cngchat CNG Marketplace forum:

Summary of the Oregon State Motorpool cars sold last month (seems the State had suddenly realized it was about to be 2015 so they auctioned them in a hurry.)

Tank closed year final bid odometer notes
1605 141226 2001 $4600+10% 104885 Public Surplus: runs great; CVT transmission operating properly
1512 141229 2001 $2520+12% 79391 Gov Deals: missing on one cyl (mistaken for CVT judder); no floor mats; moss
                    1701 150102 2002 $4053+10% 86000 Public Surplus: stalls at low rpm;LR window doesn’t work;new RF headlamp cover

Tank expiration sticker can be checked by reaching in the spare tire well in the trunk and aiming the camera up. After a dozen or more random shots, images like the ones attached are found where the tank expiration date may be seen.

Winning bidder of the State Motorpool 2002 GX now has it for sale (flip) 2 miles away at QGT Auto Sales 1465 12th St SE Salem OR. Price paid was $4500 and it is being offered for $7500 at:

                      http://www.qgtauto.com/InventoryDetail/QCVNG0529

A notice for this car also appears on Craigslist stating that the car has a 1.3 liter engine (actually, a 1.7 liter); CD Player and MP3 player (it only has cassette player); rear spoiler (none); Hybrid (CNG fuel tank expires Jan 2017); aluminum alloy wheels (steel); in EXCELLENT condition (intermittently runs rough and stalls; LR window doesn’t work; new RF headlamp cover.)

I bought my 2004 GX ten years ago in San Francisco off of Craigslist and paid more attention to meeting the owner and deciding his reason for selling it was not due to a problem with the car (move to Florida.) I bought another used Honda from a Honda Dealership and it has proven to have been serviced properly with no concealed problems. Perhaps the mismatch of “claims” to “actual condition” with this 2002 GX being resold is representative of used car lots.

Sounds like the winner paid too much, hardly the winner if they plan to resell it for a profit. No wonder they will try deceptive practices to unload it.

1HGEN26491L000156 2001 GX Green 84073 miles Cassette/radio. Fuel tank expires 11/2015. Windows, lights, A/C - everything works and car runs smooth. Left headlight lens is clear (new?) and right is somewhat yellowed.

A buyer needs to register in advance with Public Surplus to bid. Even if car is inspected in person, the car is not allowed to be "moved" so the condition of the CVT is unknown. Because car was kept in the fleet until it needed its tank replaced this year, it's likely the transmission was performing normally. Auction ends May 27 3pm MDT (4pm PDT?)

The State of Oregon Surplus sales has had this car for over 6 months and waited until its tank was nearly expired to auction it. PG&E now requires a tank inspection to apply for a fueling card to use the Chico CNG station if driving car to CA.

A gorgeous blue 2004 GX (last year to have CVT) will be auctioned after this one. The interior looks so new, it may have been assigned a high state official (95171 miles.) When VIN 1HGEN26515L000330 is listed, its only defects are dead battery and rear passenger windows that don’t work (perhaps a fuse or child safety switch.) Tank expiration 09/2019. It's not uncommon for these cars to be driven 300,000 miles or more.

These state agency cars are being posted because state agencies do not post to cngchat. Tank exp dates are unknown except for #1378421 which is 09/2019 (the others would be close to this date also):

It is recommended to register with www.publicsurplus.com ahead of time and note the terms which include a 10%-12% "Buyers Premium". Experience has been that the auctions may not see much bidding activity (car will appear underpriced) until, in some cases, the last hour. So it is helpful to practice putting up a bid early to provide practice so a successful bid may be submitted (as close to a minute) prior to the auction close. Thinking a boost box would be needed to get the Oregon GX to drive off the lot, I asked the clerk, who said the agency actually has an exchange contract with a reconditioned battery supplier and would probably swap the battery for one that works - for which the agency only pays $7.
