Hey gang, CNGchat needs your help!

For over a decade we have enjoyed providing this little corner of the Internet for folks to discuss all things natural gas vehicles. It is the largest forum of its kind: with some 70,000 posts on over 11,000 topics. But with continued low gasoline & diesel prices and strong automaker support for electric vehicles, consumer interest in CNG has dropped considerably, and with it has visitor traffic here. As a result, Google ad revenues no longer cover hosting fees.

If you find CNGchat to be a useful resource then please consider making a modest donation to support keeping this remarkable pool of knowledge available to the alternative fuels community. Thanks!

  • Should I buy a 2003 Honda Civic GX?

I'm considering buying the GX in the listing linked below, but I have a few misgivings.

Firstly, I've never owned a CNG vehicle before, and this would only be my second car.

Also, I've looked at its autocheck report which is in the link below, but if there's a way to tell if the car has ever seen any repair, I don't know what it is. I've read the manual and it said the fuel tank must be replaced every 15 years, and that's how old the car is. So, either I would need to know that the tank has been replaced at some point, or see that the tank replacement would be cheap enough not to invalidate purchasing the car in the first place. I'm not an expert, but if it's easy enough I might be able to replace it myself.

Everything else about the car seems fine. Despite being 15 years old it's only got 118,000 miles, and has had no accidents.

Most likely the fuel tank has expired, the cost to replace could be around $4,000.00. You could ask the seller for a photo of the tank sticker. Or call a CNG tank mechanic to get a quote on replacement.

Here in California, most of us with a white sticker for single HOV access will lose those privileges on December 31, 2018. My guess is a few will want to sell their Hondas and go with some other type of alternative fueled vehicle so they can get the new red sticker for single HOV access. You may want to wait till early-mid January to make a purchase.

Along with replacing the expired gas tank, you will also need a new, replacement, CVT transmission, as those usually don't go much more than 100k miles. The CVT transmission in the 2nd generation GX (01 - 05) is the biggest problem that they have. The first generation (98 - 00) has a four speed automatic. The 2006 on up also have the much more desirable, multi-speed automatic transmissions.

I am trying to sell my 07 GX Civic but where I am at, in PA, there’s not much acceptance to natural gas. Would you guys have tips on how to sell it?

Your best bet would be to advertise it in states that allow HOV access for CNG cars--Arizona is one example.

No. Besides that used car being way overpriced. So many expensive things are likely to go on a GX of this age. High pressure regulator. Can be 100 % functional one day and be junk the next. $1500 - 2000. CVT trans Used $500 rebuilt $ 2500 $. sensors $$$ , fuel injectors $$$. Sensors and regulators go bad with age, not miles.. Just my 2 cents worth.

List it on All of the following: E Bay, Craigslist Salt Lake City , Craigslist Oklahoma City , and KSL in the cars want ads. You are going to have to find a buyer in Utah or OK , to get a decent price.
