  • diesel - CNG

I own a Civic GX and a Duramax Diesel truck. I am looking into converting the truck to run on 50%+ CNG / Diesel mix. If anyone has any information or experience in this please post or email me.

    Thanks,
    Alex

        Re: diesel - CNG

Checked on the hlineconversion site not much info there ,just pictures on hummers burning out the rear tires.
I started out trying to make my diesel run on more propane ,I just don't think it can be done above a 30% cng or lpg. The diesels just doesn't like such a easly ignitable fuel.
I have a few spare engines if I make a little mistake on ratios,Hopfully I won't need them.

Always intrested in something new or what someone else is doing..Keep me posted ,I can be reached by phone If you want,(My have some extra parts?.)should not be any ld charges ..

This is done on the heavy duty side in both trash haulers and UPS. http://www.cumminswestport.com/
They have a system that varies the ratio for the load demand.

Being new here ,and wanting to learn ,I checked out that link cumminswestport,The only thing that could find was diesel motors that were converted to run on straight cng or lpg ,they had much lowered compression and spark plugs,I may have missed something...
Since I am trying to get my own run ratios higher ,I want to find out anything I can..

              Re: diesel - CNG

Hello, I'm interested in the CNG substitution in diesel motors as well and have read on a couple sites that it can go up to somewhere around 80%. This was a link on the "sae" site above, maybe you didn't see it in your last search.
              http://www.saeenergy.com/products.htm
It's just a teaser for a kit to come it sounds like, but at least they're working on it. They say 70% cng in the blurb about it. The other place I read about it was here:
              http://www.dualfuel.org/index.htm
The problem with that place it that it is in the Middle East. I haven't tried to contact them but when I get my diesel Scout up and running that's the direction I want to go in. Let me know if you get any more info,
              Thanks,
              Darress

                Re: diesel - CNG

I was filling up the other day at the Questar plant in SLC, UT and there was a Queastr diesel big rig there filling up, it had 4 tanks behind the cab standing straight up. The guy said it is piped into the air intake at a 20 percent mix. It had a n14 big cam cummins diesel in it. He also said it gives it about an extra 100hp kick.

                  Re: diesel - CNG

For non-dedicated diesel conversions, the CNG is injected into the intake stream similar to propane injections. It is called fumigation and I have seen several kits on the market for around $1800 (plus the tanks<s>). It doesn't require spark plugs, but uses the diesel fuel to ignite the CNG. I believe they go up to 80% CNG. I am also thinking the system allows the engine to run on straight diesel, or use both fuels at the same time.

Do a search using diesel CNG conversion.

                    Re: diesel - CNG

Hi, I just found this forum. I have a Duramax with cng injection. I typically get 50 mpg on diesel using cng. I get around 22 mpg on cng at the same time. I have been using it for over two years.

                        Re: diesel - CNG

According to University of Utah Chemistry department, diesels will run in the laboratory at a max of 95% CNG with 5% diesel fuel. SnowMotion in SLC UT. is doing diesel converstions with a 80% CNG & 20% diesel fuel mixture. Call Matt or Rick at 801-281-4766. CNG is the best fuel option currently and is the stepping stone to hydrogen. Everything we learn from CNG puts us that much closer to hydrogen. 95% of the worlds hydrogen comes from CNG. The main obstacle to hydrogen is finding a cheap way to strip it from CNG or water.

Last time I called Rick he told me that they won't have a kit for the diesels untill next year sometime? Does anyone know if this has changed?

thanks for those, I have already looked at most of those sites, good info on them yet not a single kit for sale (in USA in some cases)
